About John.

A Human Rights and Access to Justice champion, a lawyer, a Programme Manager, a writer and a fitness devotee; a common man with uncommon determination.

He holds a Bachelor degree in Law and currently finalising on his Master’s degree in Project Planning and Management. John has also been trained on Trial Advocacy, Commercial Litigation and Countering Violent Extremism (CT & CVE). He is also an International Visitors Leadership Program alumnus (2019).

Currently, John is a Senior Programme Officer at Article 19. He is responsible for ensuring that Article 19 plays a crucial role in promoting an enabling legal and policy environment for people's participation in shaping their societies in the Eastern African Region.

Previously he was the Legal Aid Manager at African Prison Project (APP), a UK based Charity organization operating in Kenya, UK and Uganda. In his role, he oversaw the delivery of the charity’s strategic legal aid initiatives around its drop-in-Legal Advice clinics in Kenya. He was instrumental in the establishment of nine inmate led legal aid clinics and oversaw training of over one hundred and sixteen prison officers and inmates as prison based paralegals. He led the training of over 40 Kenya prison officers in the United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners (the Mandela Rules) and 33 prosecutors in Legal aid, Plea agreements and Alternative Dispute resolution (ADR)

Under his watch, the Legal Aid Programme at APP was awarded the best Legal Programme (2018) at the Makini Awards organized by Nafisika, Kenya Prison Service and MasterCard Foundation. The Programme also won the 1st Judges choice in the Google Impact Challenge (2018).

John has previously worked with refugees and gender & sexual minorities. He is also a passionate and vocal advocate for the abolition of death penalty; to this end has lent his voice to the media on the subject.

John is a regular op-ed columnist with the Daily Nation on topics around governance, human rights, democracy, policy reforms and rule of law.

During his free time he enjoys playing board games, reading, cooking, engaging in fitness activities, listening to music and following current political and development news. Oh, he loves red!!
